Frequently Asked Questions
How is my weighted grade calculated?
Each assignment's score is multiplied by its weight, those are summed, then divided by the total weight entered — so a 90% on a 30%-weighted assignment counts more toward your final grade than a 90% on a 5%-weighted one.
How does the "what do I need on my final" calculation work?
It solves for the final exam score using: desired grade = current grade × (1 − final exam weight) + final exam score × final exam weight. Rearranged for the final score, it tells you exactly what percentage you'd need to hit your target overall grade.
What if the required final exam score is over 100%?
That means your target grade isn't mathematically reachable even with a perfect final exam score, given your current grade and the final's weight — the tool will show this clearly rather than a misleading number.
Do the assignment weights need to add up to 100%?
No — the calculator normalizes by dividing by however much total weight you've entered, so partial course weightings (e.g. only the assignments graded so far) still produce an accurate weighted average for what's been entered.
How does "Drop lowest score(s)" work?
Set it to a number greater than 0 and the calculator finds that many assignments with the lowest scores, removes them entirely (both their score and weight), and recalculates the weighted average from whatever's left — matching how a real drop-the-lowest grading policy works. It won't let you drop every assignment; at least one has to remain.
What letter grade scale does this tool use?
It uses a common default 10-point scale with plus/minus grades (97+ = A+, 93–96.99 = A, 90–92.99 = A-, and so on down to below 60 = F). This is a widely used convention, not a universal standard — actual grading scales vary by school and even by individual course, so check your syllabus for the scale that actually applies to you.
