Frequently Asked Questions
What do the Flesch Reading Ease and Grade Level scores mean?
Flesch Reading Ease runs from 0 to 100, where higher means easier to read (90+ is very easy, below 30 is very difficult). The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level instead estimates the U.S. school grade a reader would need to easily understand the text, like 8.0 meaning eighth-grade level.
How accurate is the syllable counting?
It uses a standard vowel-group counting heuristic, the same approach most readability tools use, which is a close approximation rather than a perfect dictionary-based count — it can be off by one syllable on some irregular words, but averages out well across a full piece of text.
What's a good target score for general web content?
Most style guides for general audiences (like newspapers) aim for a Flesch Reading Ease of roughly 60–70, corresponding to an 8th–9th grade reading level — easy enough for a broad audience without feeling oversimplified.

No — the entire analysis happens locally in your browser using JavaScript, so nothing you paste in is ever sent to a server.
