Unit Converter
Convert length, weight, temperature, volume, area, speed, time, digital storage, pressure, and energy units — updated live as you type, with the formula shown for every result.
How to Convert Units
- Choose a category — Length, Weight, Temperature, Volume, Area, Speed, Time, Digital Storage, Pressure, or Energy — using the pills at the top of the tool.
- Enter a value in the "From" field and pick the starting unit from the dropdown.
- Pick the target unit in the "To" dropdown — the converted value updates instantly as you type, along with the exact formula used.
- Click "Swap Units" to flip the From/To units and see the reverse conversion.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does temperature use a different conversion method than length or weight?
Length and weight conversions are simple multiplication (e.g., 1 inch = 0.0254 meters) because they share a zero point. Temperature scales (Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin) don't share a zero point, so the tool first converts your value to Celsius internally, then converts from Celsius to your target unit.
How accurate are the length and weight conversions?
Conversions use standard international definitions (e.g., 1 mile = 1609.344 meters, 1 pound = 0.453592 kilograms) and round the result to five decimal places, which is precise enough for everyday cooking, DIY, and travel use.
Can I convert between categories, like meters to pounds?
No — Length, Weight, Temperature, Volume, Area, Speed, Time, Digital Storage, Pressure, and Energy are separate unit systems that can't be meaningfully converted between each other. Switching categories with the pills resets the From and To dropdowns to that category's units.
What happens if I leave the input blank or type letters?
The tool needs a numeric value to convert; if the field is empty or not a number, the status message asks you to enter a number instead of showing a result.
Does the Swap Units button also swap the numeric value?
No, it swaps only the selected From and To units, not the number you typed — this lets you quickly see the reverse conversion rate for the same figure.
What does the conversion formula line under the result show?
It shows the exact multiplier or formula the tool just used, such as "1 mi = 1.609344 km" for a simple ratio or "°F = °C × 9/5 + 32" for temperature, so you can see and reuse the math yourself instead of treating the result as a black box.
Does Digital Storage use 1000 or 1024 for a kilobyte?
Both, as separate units. Kilobytes, Megabytes, Gigabytes, and Terabytes use the decimal (SI) definition where 1 GB = 1000 MB, matching how storage manufacturers and most operating systems report file and drive sizes. Kibibytes, Mebibytes, Gibibytes, and Tebibytes use the binary definition where 1 GiB = 1024 MiB, matching how RAM capacity is measured. Pick the unit that matches what you're converting.
Are the Volume units US customary or UK imperial?
US customary. Teaspoons, tablespoons, fluid ounces, cups, pints, quarts, and gallons all use US definitions (e.g., 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 liters). UK imperial gallons and pints are about 20% larger, so don't mix the two systems.
What day and year lengths does the Time category use for Months and Years?
A Month is the 30.44-day calendar average (2,629,746 seconds) and a Year is the 365.25-day Julian year (31,557,600 seconds) commonly used for scientific unit conversions. Both are averages, so converting a specific calendar month or leap year may be off by a day.
