How to Remove a Background

  1. Upload a photo — the first time on this page, an AI model (~16 MB) downloads once.
  2. Processing starts automatically once the model is ready.
  3. Preview the result against the checkerboard, which shows the transparent areas.
  4. Click "Download PNG" to save it with a transparent background.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this upload my photo anywhere?

No. The AI model that removes the background is downloaded once to your browser, and every photo you process afterward runs entirely on your own device — no image is ever sent to a server. You can even disconnect from the internet after the model finishes loading and it will keep working.

Why does the first photo take longer than the second one?

The AI model is roughly 16 MB and only needs to download once per visit — your browser caches it afterward. The first photo you process includes that download plus the time to initialize the model; every photo after that only pays the actual processing time, which is much faster.

What kind of photos does this work best on?

Photos with one clear subject against a reasonably distinct background — a product shot, a portrait, an object on a plain surface — work best. Fine detail like loose hair strands, fur, or a subject that blends closely into the background in color and lighting can come out less precise, since the model is estimating an edge rather than reading exact pixel boundaries.

What model does this actually use?

U2-Net, an open-source neural network built specifically for this kind of salient object segmentation. It's the same well-established model behind several popular background-removal tools, running here through ONNX Runtime Web entirely inside your browser.
