Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from the Tip Calculator's bill split?
The Tip Calculator splits one bill equally among a number of people. This tool is for when different people paid different amounts across possibly multiple expenses, and you need to work out the minimum set of payments so everyone ends up having paid an equal fair share.
How does it calculate who pays who?
It computes each person's net balance (what they paid minus their equal fair share of the total), then repeatedly matches whoever is owed the most money with whoever owes the most money until every balance reaches zero. This greedy settle-up approach minimizes the total number of payments needed.
Does everyone have to split the total equally?
Yes โ this tool assumes an equal split of the total among everyone listed. If people should owe different shares (like one person only attending part of a trip), you'd need to adjust the numbers manually.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No โ every calculation happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript, so nothing you enter is ever sent to a server.
