How to Calculate Tiles Needed

  1. Enter your room's length and width, and your tile's length and width.
  2. Set a waste allowance percentage (10% is typical for simple layouts).
  3. Enter how many tiles come in one box.
  4. See the floor area, tiles needed, and boxes to buy — all updated instantly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why add a waste allowance?

Some tiles will need to be cut to fit room edges, corners, and obstacles, and cutting inevitably wastes material or breaks pieces — a 10% allowance is standard for simple rectangular rooms, while more complex layouts (diagonal patterns, lots of corners) often call for 15–20%.

How does this figure out how many boxes to buy?

It divides your total tiles needed (including the waste allowance) by how many tiles come in each box, then rounds up — since you can only buy whole boxes, and rounding down would leave you short.

Does this account for grout lines between tiles?

No — it treats each tile as covering its full stated size. Grout lines take up a small amount of additional space between tiles, which very slightly increases the true number of tiles needed for a perfectly precise calculation, but this is a minor effect the waste allowance comfortably covers in practice.
