Slug Generator

Turn any title or phrase into a clean, URL-friendly slug — updated live as you type, with separator, case, length, and batch options.

How to Turn Text Into a URL Slug

  1. Type or paste your title or phrase into the text field — a sample title is pre-filled so you can see it working right away. Accented letters like é, ñ, and ü are automatically transliterated to their plain-letter equivalents.
  2. Choose your separator: hyphen (-), underscore (_), or None to join words with no separator at all.
  3. Toggle "Force lowercase" depending on whether you want an all-lowercase slug or one that preserves your original letter casing.
  4. Set a Max Length if you need to cap the slug's size — the generator drops whole words from the end so it never cuts off mid-word.
  5. Need to convert several titles at once? Turn on Batch Mode, paste one title per line, and get one slug per line back in the same order.
  6. The Slug field updates instantly as you type; click Copy Slug when you're happy with the result.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a good URL slug?

A good slug is short, lowercase, made of the key words from the title, separated consistently (usually with hyphens), and free of special characters, spaces, or filler words that don't help a reader or search engine understand the page.

How does the generator handle accented characters like é or ñ?

It runs the text through Unicode NFKD normalization and strips out the diacritical marks, so "café" becomes "cafe" instead of being deleted or left as an escaped character in the slug.

What happens to punctuation and symbols in my text?

Anything that isn't a letter, number, space, hyphen, or underscore is removed outright before the separator is applied, so "Faster Laptop!" simply drops the exclamation point rather than converting it to a word.

Should I use a hyphen, an underscore, or no separator at all?

Hyphen is selected by default because most search engines, including Google, treat a hyphen as a word boundary but read an underscore-joined phrase as one solid string. Underscores are still offered here for cases like filenames or code identifiers where they're the convention, and a "None" option is available if you want the words joined directly with no separator character at all.

Can the resulting slug end up empty?

Yes — if your input is made up entirely of symbols or characters that get stripped out (with no letters or numbers left), the slug field can come back blank. Leading and trailing separators are also automatically trimmed from the result.

Can I keep the original capitalization instead of forcing lowercase?

By default the generator forces every letter to lowercase, which is the URL convention almost every site follows. Unchecking "Force lowercase" preserves your original capitalization instead, so "Café Münchën" becomes "Cafe-Munchen" rather than "cafe-munchen".

Can I limit how long the slug is?

Enter a number in the Max Length field (leave it at 0 for no limit) and the generator drops whole words from the end until the slug fits within that limit, so it never cuts off in the middle of a word. If a single word is still longer than the limit on its own, that word is hard-cut to fit.

Can I generate slugs for multiple titles at once?

Yes — turn on Batch Mode and paste multiple titles or lines into the text box, one per line. The output box returns one slug per line, in the same order, with every line converted independently using your chosen separator, case, and length settings.
